Romantic 9 Day Paris Honeymoon Hack: Vive le Deal

glass-building-1796725

Have you always dreamed of a Honeymoon in Paris?

You can imagine yourself having a picnic on the lawn next to the Eiffel towel.

Walking through the city and you can smell the fresh croissants baking as shops open for the day.

Sharing a kiss as you take a boat down the Seine as pass the Louvre. This is the honeymoon for you.

But the flights are $750 round trip…each. And that is with a layover in Iceland. Actually, a layover in Iceland might not be that bad?

You’ve even found an Airbnb in the 5th arrondissment that wouldn’t be that bad. 3.8 stars, 42 reviews. 4th floor walk up, 3 blocks from a metro station.

Wait, the shower picture looks a little dicey. Why isn’t there a cleaning fee? Four reviews say the bathroom is gross. Even for Europe. Pass.

What about a hotel? Great, everything anyplace close is $200 a night. We’ve already spent too much on the florist… and everything else.

Let’s go to Europe for our 5 year anniversary instead.

Will we have a kid by then? Can you bring a baby to Europe? Do babies need passports? Cobblestones and strollers, that sounds like a joyful experience.

Okay, Mexico honeymoon now.

Hacking the Flights

Paris (CDG) airport is served from points across the United States. This example will use American Airlines.

American Airlines award chart lists MileSAAver Award space between the United States and Europe at 60,000 points roundtrip.

With the Barclaycard American AAdvantage Red card you earn 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles after making your first purchase. A $99 annual fee is charged on the first statement.

That amount of AAdvantage miles from opening two of these cards will provide enough points to book two round-trip flights from the US to Paris.

International flights apply a number of US and international airport taxes that increase the cost of these bookings and utilizing miles does not eliminate these taxes. My test bookings came up with around $90 in taxes per person.
