11 Day Italian Honeymoon: Rome-ing Italy and Saving

Venice Pic

Have you always dreamed of an Italian honeymoon?

Can you imagine yourself wander through the Roman Forum ruins?

You could see Michaelangelo’s David in person instead of on the pages of an art history textbook.

Or deciding which David statue you like better, Michaelangelo’s or Bernini’s? My vote is for Bernini, in one of my many unpopular opinions.

Being paddled through Venice’s canals or seeing the wonder of St. Mark’s cathedral before it sinks into the sea. The time to visit Italy is now. This guide will show you how to save thousands on an 11 day cheap Italian honeymoon to the cities of Venice, Florence, and Rome.

Due to their popularity, the redemption value of this trip is not outstanding. But, nothing is better than a dollar you don’t have to spend. So, use this rewards point guide to save around $3,500 on this European honeymoon.

VENICE

AC Hotel Venezia

The AC Hotel Venezia has stylish modern rooms and its location allows you to sleep each night in Venice.

The location is acceptable. Venice is REALLY expensive. For this stay, we needed to go a bit away from the most popular tourist zone to add extra days exploring Venice. This hotel is around a 20 minute walk to St. Mark’s square. You will pass fantastic architecture and traverse canals through this wonderful city. I’ve stayed on this side of Venice on my honeymoon. Don’t worry, it will be okay.

This plan has you staying 3 nights at the AC Hotel Venezia. The hotel is a category 6 Marriott property for 40,000 points per night. Steep.

The stay requires 120,000 Marriott points. I’ll show you how to get the required points later. You will earn the points required through a combination of opening the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless credit card and transferring points from the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

After your three days exploring the wonders of Venice, pack up your bags and catch a train for Florence. Train tickets from Venezia San Lucia to Firenze Santa Maria Novella were around $50 each.

FLORENCE

Florence Regency

Stay in a 19th century Florentine villa at the Florence Regency hotel.

Hotel Regency offers a historical stay that’s in the heart of Florence and yet tucked away from it all. Walk through the winding alleyways of downtown Florence or relax in the hotel’s private garden. The hotel is a category 6 Hyatt property for 25,000 points per night.

Hacking the Flights

Rome (FCO) and Venice (VCE) airports are served from points across the United States. This example will use American Airlines.

American Airlines award chart lists MileSAAver Award space between the United States and Europe at 60,000 points round trip.

The Barclaycard American AAdvantage Red card you earn 60,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles after making your first purchase.

Playa Del Carmen Honeymoon Hack

A $99 annual fee is charged on the first statement. That amount of AAdvantage miles from opening two of these cards will provide enough points to book two roundtrip flights from the US to Rome and Venice. If at all possible try not to route your trip through through London. London piles on an enormous amount of taxes on an award redemption.

International flights apply many US and international airport taxes that increase the cost of these bookings and utilizing miles does not eliminate these taxes.
